ASSESSING DECEPTION OR HONESTY THROUGH OBSERVATION OF A SUSPECT'S BODY LANGUAGE
October 20-21, 2008
Under stressful questioning, individuals often reveal involuntary behaviors that a perceptive interrogator can use to assess deceptive responses as opposed to honest ones. This program will provide instruction and demonstrations to give participants skills to read behavioral signals of bodily changes such as posture, breathing and other movements that cannot be consciously controlled. Participants will learn how to improve their perception skills to recognize attitudes and assess deception and resistance. Topics include: (1) how messages are transmitted through physical as well as verbal means; (2) why body reactions often mean more than just what is said; (3) changes in behavior often forecast shifts in attitudes of the person being interviewed; (4) becoming adept in detecting deception; and (5) limitations of body language as cues to deception or indications of honesty. INSTRUCTOR: Lt. John Thomason, Criminal Investigation Unit, Lakeland Police Department, Lakeland, Florida. NOTE: This is a basic, introductory seminar on body language for persons who have no formal training on the topic.

APPROVAL BY MARYLAND POLICE AND TRAINING COMMISSIONS: This program has been submitted to the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission for in-service training hours. For information on the status of this application, call Jacob Haber at (302) 654-9091.

DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Program will be conducted October 20-21, 2008 at the Hyattsville Police Department, 4310 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, Maryland. Classes will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

FEE: $295 per person. Agencies enrolling three or more persons in this program program are entitled to claim a 15% team discount.
