COMMUNICATING WITH HISPANIC PERSONS IN STREET SITUATIONS
May 18-19, 2009
A two-day seminar for law enforcement officers who don't speak Spanish. Participants will learn to write a citation, obtain basic information from a subject, safely make a felony car stop, and safely arrest a Spanish speaking person. Topics include: (1) an overview of various Hispanic cultures; (2) common arrest expressions; (3) numbers, days of the week, and months of the year; (4) common parts of the body; (5) courtesy expressions; (6) street Spanish terms; (7) asking for information to complete a report; (8) cultural aspects every officer should understand; (9) commands an officer needs to stabilize a situation; (10) correct ways to use arrest phrases; and (11) ways to avoid pitfalls when conducting an investigation.

APPROVAL BY MARYLAND POLICE AND TRAINING COMMISSIONS: This program has been submitted to the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission for in-service training hours. For information on the status of this application, call Jacob Haber at (302) 654-9091.

DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Program will be conducted May 18-19, 2009 at the Hyattsville Police Department, 4310 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, Maryland. Class will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

FEE: $295 per person. Agencies enrolling three or more persons in this program are entitled to claim a 15% team discount.
