DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: POLICE PERSPECTIVES AND MEANS OF SAFE INTERVENTION November 18-19, 2008
A two-day seminar designed to provide the officer with an enhanced understanding of domestic violence intervention approaches and techniques. Program will be presented in an understandable format for the officer so that information gleaned from the presentation might be readily utilized upon return to his or her field situation. Focus of the instruction will be to provide the participant with guidelines relating to arrest authority, safety approaches, and liability issues associated with such calls for service. Topics include: (1) why officers have been reluctant to intervene in "family problems"; (2) impact of domestic violence on victims and children; (3) arrest authority in a domestic case; (4) vulnerability and liability factors for arresting officers and their departments; (5) how officers might best protect themselves during domestic intervention calls for service; and (6) resources available for victim referral.

This program has been submitted to the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission for In-Service Hours for Police and Corrections Personnel.

DATE/LOCATION/TIME: Seminar will be conducted November 18-19, 2008 at the Maryland-National Capital Park Police Headquarters, 12751 Layhill Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.. Class will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.

FEE: $295 per person. Agencies enrolling three or more persons are entitled to a 15% team discount.
